Language can build a bridge between two people who speak it. But to foreign tongues, it becomes a barrier to overcome.
Words are vibrations which inspire feelings, however, music is a Universal language. It is feeling translated through expressive sound.
For as long as I can remember, I've been enamored with music. It's my oldest friend, and a companion capable of moving me great distances. The right song at the right time can birth life-changing inspiration in even the darkest moments.
And sometimes when I listen to songs from other countries, I have no idea what the singer is saying. Yet through their expression, I am moved to tears.
Today I’m here to share what I feel is a list of Exceptional Music Selections, hand picked from around the world, for our community.
These songs keep me company on the road, and at home, and I trust you will find something you’ll absolutely love, below.
Please feel free to drop links to your favorite songs or albums in the comments below, to add to this list!
Hania Rani
With a percussive and cinematic playing style, every time Rani touches the keys, I am pulled into the trance of her music.
Hailing from Poland, this brilliant pianist composes New Classical Music, incorporating electronic, and other genre-bending elements in her performances.
Her music fosters a deep sense of home within my heart when I listen. And when I write, if she’s playing in the background, it makes every story feel like an Epic.
Hania Playing for Cercle in Paris with Full Band
GoGo Penguin
I once heard this Manchester Band describe their work as “Acoustic Video Game Music”, and I think that’s a great way to put it.
Another Gondwana Records Artist, their driving, unfurling style evolves in brilliant color over their complex compositions.
Creatively combining the Piano with the Double Bass, and a jazzy drum kit, when you’re lost in their music, it’s hard to imagine you’re listening to only 3 players working together.
Each element fits perfectly in the mix, and each player uses their own unique playing style to flex creative sounds from their respective instruments.
Hermanos Gutiérrez
These Swiss-Ecuadorian Brothers perfectly encapsulate feelings of the Old Wild West in their dusty, illustrious music.
Drenched in reverb and delay, the two finger pick intertwining melodies on their guitars, tapping their pickups to further build the rhythm of each tune.
Put their music on, close your eyes, and you’ll be instantly transported through tumbleweeds and time, with Los Hermanos behind the wheel.
Susanna Baca
Baca was a key figure in reviving the once forgotten Afro-Peruvian Music Style in Peru.
Her song, “Maria Lando” was featured on a 1995 compilation CD, “Afro-Peruvian Classics: The Soul of Black Peru”, sparking International fame, and 3 Latin Grammys for Baca.
The first time I heard this song, it stopped me in my tracks, and I couldn’t do anything else but listen with full attention. The raw, hopeful love in her voice reveals beauty even in tragedy.
Planet Uterus
What do you call the Artist who changes their name with nearly every release? In this case, by their name on Soundcloud, Planet Uterus.
Known as DJ Healer, Traumprinz, DJ Metatron, Prime Minister of Doom, Golden Baby, Irini, Prince of Denmark, The Phantasy, and more, there are consistent themes between each project, yet the method of delivery varies as his characters continue to evolve.
This Underground Dance Music Legend is a master of sampling, dream-like pad synthesis, and evading identification, like a sibling of Banksy working in a different medium.
It’s hard not to say more here, because this Artist’s music has had an immense impact on my life over the years. In high and low moments.
So I’ll post a playlist of some of my favorite tracks, and you can listen for what interests you.
